Contract: Reading Station Re-Development, Caversham Rd

Contractor: Costain Hochtief JV

Client: Network rail

Joint venture partners, Costain Ltd and Hochtief were awarded the contract for the re-development of Reading Station. This was part of Network Rail’s estimated £850 Million project to transform the railway system.

This re-development will bring 5 new railway platforms, as well as a large linking footbridge to new entrances on the North and South of the station. After previous successful projects with Costain Ltd, Anglewest Ltd were contracted to carry out the scaffold works which consisted of a birdcage to the transfer deck, numerous other bridged stepped birdcages to the stairs and escalators, hoist run offs, temporary roofs as well as screen and canopy scaffolds.

Towards the final stages of this phase of the project, Anglewest Ltd formulated a semi-permanent solution to construct a tuff-coat screen (a shrink wrap system), to create a weatherproof canopy to the edge of the escalators and over the platform at the phase break section of the project. Finally, one of the last structures constructed was a bespoke designed 125m long scaffolding temporary platform, complete with anti-slip surface, blister tiles and yellow restriction markings whilst the main platforms were altered and extended. All these works were completed outside normal working hours and during line shut downs.
